Mahasaya Books offers collectible books by or related to Paramahansa Yogananda, including those mentioned in his Autobiography of a Yogi, published by his organization, Self-Realization Fellowship, or written by or about people the guru had met, quoted, or mentioned in his autobiography.
“Mahasaya” (muh-HA-shy) is a Sanskrit spiritual title meaning “large-minded.” In Autobiography of a Yogi it most prominently appears in the name of Paramahansaji’s guru’s guru, Lahiri Mahasaya. Various saints referred to the young Mukunda Lal Ghosh (Sri Yogananda’s birth name) as Choto Mahasaya, which he humbly translated as “little sir.” He gives the accurate definition of “mahasaya” much later in his autobiography. Master Mahasaya (Mahendra Nath Gupta), a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, and Shastri Mahasaya, Mukunda’s Sanskrit tutor who later became Swami Kebalananda, are two other saintly persons who were given the title.
